Seatbelt sensors on new planes

I was on a new Boeing 737 and apparently they come equipped with seatbelt sensors. So you know how some people like to unlatch their seatbelts before the plane pulls up to the jetway? The pilot comes on over the speaker and says there are 14 people, then 15 people not buckled in and to please fasten their seatbelts.
