So, not only does gas here cost a lot, and it's only 91 octane instead of 93, it also has up to 10% ethanol. I'm pretty sure ethanol has a lower energy density than gas, so per gallon, we have less energy. So that translates into lower gas mileage. Sucks eh?

Actually pure ethanol has an octane rating of 116, so don't blame it for lower octane California-style 91 gas. But yes ethanol has dismal energy density. You're gonna get lower gas mileage!
Yup, you're right. It just means that there's more 87 octane crap mixed in to bring the effective octane rating down to 91, even with the high octane ethanol. E85 makes for cheap race gas :)
