Google showing store traffichistogram

Google now provides typical traffic in restaurants and other places like gyms (where they have enough data) in a histogram. I just wonder where they get the data from.... people leaving on their GPS?

I got a piece of mail from a charity asking for donations. Having never heard of them before, I decided to do some research on them.
